Multi-currency accounting: how to record Stripe and PayPal payments
If you collect payments through Stripe or PayPal in currencies other than the euro (USD, GBP, etc.), exchange-rate fluctuations create differences that must be booked.
How are exchange differences booked?
- If the rate works in your favour (you receive more euros than expected): financial income (account 768).
- If the rate works against you: financial expense (account 668).
Which exchange rate to use?
The exchange rate on the date of the transaction (invoice date) is used. At year end, foreign-currency balances are revalued at the 31 December rate.
